Power Through the Heat with Gene Johnson’s AC Experts by Your Side

Mountlake Terrace, WA may have that small-town charm, but when summer settles in, the heat doesn’t pull any punches. Those peaceful, tree-lined streets and cozy neighborhoods can get downright toasty by mid-July — and that’s when a dependable air conditioning system goes from “nice to have” to “absolutely essential.”

    HVAC Services

At Gene Johnson Heating, Cooling, Plumbing & Electrical, we understand how important comfort is — especially during Washington’s unexpected heatwaves. That’s why we provide complete air conditioning services to homeowners throughout Mountlake Terrace. Whether your system just needs a quick repair, you’re ready for a total upgrade, or it’s time for your annual tune-up, we’re the crew you want on your side.

We’re not just another HVAC company; we’re your neighbors. And we show up ready to solve problems, deliver results, and make your home feel just the way it should — cool, calm, and completely comfortable.

AC Repair Services in Mountlake Terrace, WA

There’s nothing like that sinking feeling when your AC kicks on… and nothing happens. Or maybe it runs but never really cools the house down. Or it’s making noises you definitely don’t remember hearing last summer. Whatever the case, if your system’s struggling, we’ve got your back.

Our AC repair team is experienced, quick to respond, and always respectful of your home and time. When we arrive, we diagnose the issue thoroughly, explain it clearly, and offer real solutions — without the technical jargon or pressure tactics. Whether it’s a simple fix or signs of something more serious, we’ll walk you through the best path forward.

We work on all types of systems, including central air units, heat pumps, and ductless mini-splits. If it cools your home, we know how to fix it.

      Common Cooling Issues We Handle

Every home is different, but some issues pop up again and again across Mountlake Terrace. These are the ones we get called out for most often:

      • Refrigerant leaks that leave you sweating
      • Malfunctioning thermostats that don’t do what you tell them
      • Frozen evaporator coils and clogged drain lines
      • Blown capacitors, tripped breakers, and other electrical hiccups
      • Uneven cooling between rooms or poor airflow overall
      • Noisy units that sound more like a lawnmower than an AC

If your system is acting up in any of these ways, it’s time to bring in a professional. These aren’t just annoying — they can snowball into bigger issues if left untreated.

We Also Repair Heat Pumps and Mini-Split Systems

Not every home in Mountlake Terrace has central air. More and more homeowners are using ductless setups like mini-splits or hybrid systems like heat pumps. We’re fully trained and equipped to handle these systems too.

So whether you’ve got one wall-mounted unit that’s gone silent or a heat pump that’s not switching between heating & cooling correctly, give us a call. We handle mini-split repair, heat pump troubleshooting, and anything else your modern system throws at us.

AC Installation in Mountlake Terrace, WA

If you’ve been babying an old system through its final summers — or if you’ve just bought a home that never had central cooling — a new installation might be your smartest move. Today’s systems are quieter, more efficient, and more powerful than ever.

At Gene Johnson, we specialize in custom cooling system installation designed around your home and your needs. Whether you’re looking to install a traditional unit, upgrade to a heat pump, or go ductless with a mini-split setup, we’ll help you find the perfect fit.

What to Expect During the Installation Process

We like to keep things simple. When you contact us for air conditioning installation, we start by coming out to your home for a free consultation. We’ll take measurements, inspect your existing system (if there is one), and ask about how you use your space. Are you home during the day? Do you like it cooler at night? Is there one room that’s always hotter than the rest?

Once we’ve got the full picture, we’ll recommend the best system for your layout and budget. Then we schedule the installation at your convenience — no long waits or scheduling games.

Our team will arrive on time, remove your old unit if needed, install the new one with precision, and run a full test to make sure everything is working just right. We clean up after ourselves, walk you through how to use your new system, and leave you with peace of mind.

Heat Pump & Mini-Split Installation Options

Not all homes are suited for ducts, especially older builds or recent additions. That’s where ductless mini-split services come into play. These are perfect for spaces like in-law units, home offices, or upper floors that never quite stay cool.

We also install heat pumps, which provide both heating & cooling — perfect for our Pacific Northwest climate. These are efficient, eco-friendly, and can often reduce your utility bills over time.

Our mini-split installation and heat pump installs are fast, clean, and tailored to your home’s unique layout.

AC Maintenance in Mountlake Terrace, WA

There’s no better way to avoid mid-summer breakdowns than by staying on top of regular maintenance. Think of it like an oil change for your air conditioner — small effort now, big savings later.

Our air conditioning maintenance & tune-ups are detailed, comprehensive, and designed to catch small issues before they become big ones. We recommend a yearly check-up for every system, even the newer ones. It’s the best way to keep things efficient, prevent breakdowns, and extend your system’s lifespan.

      What’s Included in a Typical Tune-Up

During your AC maintenance appointment, we roll up our sleeves and get into the nuts and bolts of your system. That includes:

      • Cleaning coils and filters
      • Testing refrigerant levels and pressure
      • Inspecting blower motors, belts, and fan components
      • Tightening electrical connections
      • Checking your thermostat calibration
      • Verifying airflow throughout the home
      • Making recommendations for any repairs or upgrades

We don’t cut corners — we’re there to help you avoid that dreaded “no cool air” call in the middle of July.

Maintenance Plans That Make Life Easier

Want to skip the reminder calls and service scheduling? We’ve got maintenance plans that do all the work for you. Sign up once, and we’ll handle the rest — reminders, priority scheduling, and even discounts on parts or repairs when needed.

Our goal is to make AC maintenance as hands-off and hassle-free as possible. Because keeping your home comfortable shouldn’t feel like a chore.

Armando was incredible and super kind and helpful through and through. He gave us an honest assessment of the situation with no pressure to make a decision until we could make a decision. I would 100% use gene johnson again mostly because of how great he was.

Our technician arrived promptly the morning after we called, he figured out our problem in a short amount of time and then arranged to come out the next day and replace our failed pressure relief valve. We messaged our neighborhood WhatsApp group to see if others noticed increased water pressure. Hugo went above and beyond when he went to our neighbors to test their water pressures to see if they had issues. Some did. I’m sure it will lead to follow on work. He was courteous and efficient. We are happy with his work.

We had Colby from Gene Johnson come out to estimate a gas line move for a kitchen remodel as well as a tankless water heater. He was professional (they wear shoe covers!), friendly and very honest about the requested services pricing and feasibility with a 100+ year old house. We haven’t chosen them for the actual work yet but most likely will given the experience. I will be sure to update my review when that happens!

Mike K was great. We’re in a new house, so Mike gave great advice on what to watch out for in a brand of toilet we’ve never used. Very friendly and walked me through all of our options to arrive at the best possible price.

Summary: Gene Johnson sent a tech (Matt Hunter) to address our home heating system, which was sending no heat at all to many rooms in the house. Our system is a wonky spaghetti mess of piping, controllers and pumps that theoretically delivers hot water to legacy cast iron radiators, new floorboard radiators, and seven in-floor hydronic loops. It has not worked as intended since we bought the house 15 years ago. It has likely *never worked right since the last house renovation 25 years go (2000), given the horrid “design” that was implemented then. Matt was the first tech ever to figure out how it all works. He repaired every failed component and problem that could be fixed, given our disastrous configuration. We are completely satisfied with Matt’s work and privately are enormously grateful that this money hole has now been tamed.

Our house dates to 1918, so challenges in upgrading the heating plant in 2000 were a certainty. However, the zoo in our HVAC room is nearly indecipherable. I have hired one HVAC company after another over last 15 years to make sense of it, at great expense.

Ninety percent of past techs gave incomplete explanations, proposed the replacement of a pump or controller, or the addition of a valve, and then left. Some were honest enough to simply offer a theory of how it works, while admitting they didn’t know, and then left us with a big bill.

Enter Matt Hunt. Not sure if Matt looks the part of genius plumber, but then I’ve never seen one till now. He’s a little nerdy perhaps (like me) and also a dirt bike racer. Whatever: Matt alone successfully unraveled the mysteries of our home hot-water distribution plant. He confirmed that the entire house is controlled by two thermostats, which are, incredibly, located just 16 feet apart on the first floor. (One controls all hot water distributed on the north side of the house; one controls all hot water sent to the south side. Go figure.) Matt explained why heat often doesn’t reach the upper floors even when the system is “working” (if it’s warm on the first floor, naturally, no heat is available to the second and third floors).

Matt discovered that the pressure in the water distribution lines was only 4PSI (target range: 13-22PSI), determined that the cause was huge amounts of air in the pipes, and the culprit was a broken refill valve. The new valve includes a pressure gauge so we can now see when the pressure in the water lines has fallen so low that the system can’t deliver hot water to the upper stories. He also spotted problems with the air eliminator, i.e. the “burping” component that normally should purge some/most of the air. He has proposed replacing that (agreed).

Matt drained the pipes on all floors; refilled the lines; purged all zones of air; and replaced the (broken) thermal expansion tank. Heat began to flow again to all rooms. He demosnttated that heat only happens on the upper floors provided that the two first-floor thermostats that control distribution to the entire home are below target temps and are calling for heat.

Matt mapped every radiator and hydronic zone to the main thermostat controlling it. He also determined which rooms/areas the hydronic thermostats control. (Of course, the hydronic thermostats, which are sprinkled around the house, are comic: they only perform as intended when the primary thermostats on the first floor are delivering hot water.) Matt gave us a detailed written explanation of what each component does and how it’s controlled.

Matt did all this in less time than some prior techs took to try and ultimately give up.

Our home heating system is a design wreck and will never deliver heat around the house reliably. However, with the fixes (and insights) mATT delivered, we now get heat when we want it with some work-arounds (like cooling down the first floor therostats). Further, we understand how to spot problems and fix the system going forward.

      Thank you, Matt!

Steven came out to troubleshoot our tankless water heater and quickly identified the issue as a clogged condensate pump. What really stood out was the time he took to explain everything in detail. He walked me through the condition of the unit, the manufacturer’s recommended lifespan, and the condensation damage and rust that had already occurred due to the blockage.

Steven gave me honest, thoughtful guidance and helped me make an informed decision about replacing the unit, without any pressure whatsoever. He clearly explained that we could have gotten by with a descaling for now, but also helped me understand why replacing it would likely save money and headaches over the long run.

He was patient, knowledgeable, and answered all of my questions thoroughly. I really appreciated his transparency and professionalism, and I would absolutely recommend Steven and Gene Johnson to anyone needing plumbing or tankless water heater service. Thanks!

Joseph F came for a leak we were experiencing along with his partner and was beyond helpful. We have a 4 month old and also had a contractor there at the same time. He was kind enough to entertain our little one in his swing while my husband was moving some things in the bathroom and I was talking to the contractor. So unexpected and beyond the call they came out for. Thank you!
