If you think you may have contaminants in your home’s water, call 206.792.7495 for professional Seattle water filtration system installation and repair. We will send an expert out to test the water and figure out which type of filtration system is best-suited for your home.

Clean water matters more than most people realize. We cook with it, drink it, shower in it, and give it to our kids and pets every day. Even when tap water looks clear, it can still carry unwanted chemicals, minerals, and other contaminants that affect taste, smell, and long-term health. A water filtration system helps turn everyday tap water into something you can actually feel good about using.

At Gene Johnson Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electrical, we install, repair, and maintain water filtration systems for homes across the Greater Seattle area. We have been serving Seattle, WA, and nearby communities for generations, helping families protect their water quality and their plumbing. Over the decades, we have seen how city water has changed and how the right filtration system can make a real difference in daily life.

What Is a Water Filtration System and How Does It Work?

A water filtration system is designed to remove unwanted particles, chemicals, and contaminants from your water before it reaches your faucet. Depending on the type of system, water passes through filters that trap sediment, chlorine, oil residue, and other impurities. The goal is cleaner water that is safer to drink, better tasting, and easier on your plumbing.

Some systems filter water at a single point, like under the kitchen sink, while others treat all the water entering your home. Whole-house water filtration systems protect every faucet, shower, and appliance. By filtering water before it travels through your plumbing system, these systems help reduce buildup, protect pipes, and support healthier water for your entire family.

What Is the Difference Between a Water Filtration System and a Water Softener?

Water filtration and water softening are often confused, but they serve different purposes. A water filtration system focuses on removing contaminants like chlorine, sediment, and harmful chemicals that affect water quality, taste, and safety. It improves drinking water and reduces exposure to unwanted chemicals.

A water softener, on the other hand, targets hard water minerals like calcium and magnesium. Hard water causes soap scum, dry skin, and scale buildup in pipes and appliances. While softeners improve how water feels and protect plumbing, they do not remove contaminants. Many Seattle homeowners benefit from combining filtration and softening solutions, depending on their specific needs and local water issues.

Speaking of water softeners, our Seattle plumbers also offer installation, repair, and maintenance services for this type of plumbing appliance.

Choosing the right water filtration system is not a one-size-fits-all decision. Our plumbing services are designed to match each home’s water quality, usage habits, and long-term goals.

Water filtration system installation starts with understanding your water. We test your tap water, talk through concerns like taste or water pressure, and recommend solutions that fit your household. We install a wide range of systems for residential customers.

We handle every part of the installation process, making sure your system integrates smoothly with your plumbing and delivers reliable performance.

Even high-quality filtration systems need repairs from time to time. When performance drops or leaks appear, quick service helps prevent water issues and costly repairs.

Common Water Filtration System Issues We Fix

Regular maintenance keeps your system working efficiently and extends its lifespan. Our maintenance process focuses on performance, safety, and water quality.

With routine care, your filtration system continues to deliver cleaner water you can trust.

What Are the Main Benefits of a Water Filtration System for Your Seattle Home?

Many homeowners choose water filtration systems for peace of mind and everyday comfort. Seattle tap water meets safety standards, but filtration adds an extra layer of protection and quality.

      • Improved Drinking Water: Filtration removes chlorine and contaminants that affect taste and odor.
      • Health and Safety: Reduces exposure to harmful chemicals and other contaminants.
      • Better Tasting Water: Enjoy great-tasting water straight from the tap.
      • Reduced Bottled Water Use: Saves money and reduces environmental waste.
      • Plumbing Protection: Cleaner water helps protect pipes and appliances from buildup.
      • Family Comfort: Softer, cleaner water feels better on skin and hair.
      • Confidence in Water Quality: Feel confident about the water your family uses every day.

These benefits make filtration a smart investment for Seattle homes.

How Do I Know Which Water Filtration System Is Right for My Home?

The best filtration system depends on your water quality, household size, and specific concerns. Some families want better-tasting drinking water, while others want whole-house protection. Testing your water helps identify contaminants and guides system selection. Our team walks you through the options, explains the benefits, and helps match a solution to your goals. We focus on practical recommendations, not upselling, so you get a system that fits your life.

How Often Does a Water Filtration System Need Maintenance?

Maintenance schedules vary by system type and water usage. Most filters need replacement every six to twelve months. Whole-house systems may require different timelines for sediment and carbon filters. Skipping maintenance can reduce effectiveness and strain your plumbing. Regular service keeps water quality high and helps avoid potential issues. We offer reminders and maintenance plans to make upkeep easy.

Can a Water Filtration System Affect Water Pressure?

A properly installed filtration system should not significantly reduce water pressure. Problems usually occur when filters are clogged or systems are improperly sized. Regular maintenance helps maintain steady pressure throughout the home. If pressure drops suddenly, it is often a sign that service is needed. We design installations to balance efficiency and performance.

Is Filtered Water Better Than Bottled Water?

Filtered tap water often matches or exceeds bottled water quality. With reverse osmosis and advanced filtration, contaminants are removed while preserving essential minerals. Filtered water is more cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and always available. It also avoids the storage and plastic waste associated with bottled water. Many customers find filtered tap water tastes better than bottled options.

Do Water Filtration Systems Work With Existing Plumbing?

Yes, most systems are designed to integrate with existing plumbing. During installation, we inspect your setup and make adjustments if needed. Older homes may require minor repiping or other minor plumbing updates, but most plumbing systems are flexible and adaptable. Our goal is seamless integration without disrupting your home.

We believe clean water should be simple and reliable. Our team brings experience and care to every job.

When you choose Gene Johnson, you choose a team that values quality, honesty, and long-term solutions.

Summary: Gene Johnson sent a tech (Matt Hunter) to address our home heating system, which was sending no heat at all to many rooms in the house. Our system is a wonky spaghetti mess of piping, controllers and pumps that theoretically delivers hot water to legacy cast iron radiators, new floorboard radiators, and seven in-floor hydronic loops. It has not worked as intended since we bought the house 15 years ago. It has likely *never worked right since the last house renovation 25 years go (2000), given the horrid “design” that was implemented then. Matt was the first tech ever to figure out how it all works. He repaired every failed component and problem that could be fixed, given our disastrous configuration. We are completely satisfied with Matt’s work and privately are enormously grateful that this money hole has now been tamed.

Our house dates to 1918, so challenges in upgrading the heating plant in 2000 were a certainty. However, the zoo in our HVAC room is nearly indecipherable. I have hired one HVAC company after another over last 15 years to make sense of it, at great expense.

Ninety percent of past techs gave incomplete explanations, proposed the replacement of a pump or controller, or the addition of a valve, and then left. Some were honest enough to simply offer a theory of how it works, while admitting they didn’t know, and then left us with a big bill.

Enter Matt Hunt. Not sure if Matt looks the part of genius plumber, but then I’ve never seen one till now. He’s a little nerdy perhaps (like me) and also a dirt bike racer. Whatever: Matt alone successfully unraveled the mysteries of our home hot-water distribution plant. He confirmed that the entire house is controlled by two thermostats, which are, incredibly, located just 16 feet apart on the first floor. (One controls all hot water distributed on the north side of the house; one controls all hot water sent to the south side. Go figure.) Matt explained why heat often doesn’t reach the upper floors even when the system is “working” (if it’s warm on the first floor, naturally, no heat is available to the second and third floors).

Matt discovered that the pressure in the water distribution lines was only 4PSI (target range: 13-22PSI), determined that the cause was huge amounts of air in the pipes, and the culprit was a broken refill valve. The new valve includes a pressure gauge so we can now see when the pressure in the water lines has fallen so low that the system can’t deliver hot water to the upper stories. He also spotted problems with the air eliminator, i.e. the “burping” component that normally should purge some/most of the air. He has proposed replacing that (agreed).

Matt drained the pipes on all floors; refilled the lines; purged all zones of air; and replaced the (broken) thermal expansion tank. Heat began to flow again to all rooms. He demosnttated that heat only happens on the upper floors provided that the two first-floor thermostats that control distribution to the entire home are below target temps and are calling for heat.

Matt mapped every radiator and hydronic zone to the main thermostat controlling it. He also determined which rooms/areas the hydronic thermostats control. (Of course, the hydronic thermostats, which are sprinkled around the house, are comic: they only perform as intended when the primary thermostats on the first floor are delivering hot water.) Matt gave us a detailed written explanation of what each component does and how it’s controlled.

Matt did all this in less time than some prior techs took to try and ultimately give up.

Our home heating system is a design wreck and will never deliver heat around the house reliably. However, with the fixes (and insights) mATT delivered, we now get heat when we want it with some work-arounds (like cooling down the first floor therostats). Further, we understand how to spot problems and fix the system going forward.

      Thank you, Matt!

Steven came out to troubleshoot our tankless water heater and quickly identified the issue as a clogged condensate pump. What really stood out was the time he took to explain everything in detail. He walked me through the condition of the unit, the manufacturer’s recommended lifespan, and the condensation damage and rust that had already occurred due to the blockage.

Steven gave me honest, thoughtful guidance and helped me make an informed decision about replacing the unit, without any pressure whatsoever. He clearly explained that we could have gotten by with a descaling for now, but also helped me understand why replacing it would likely save money and headaches over the long run.

He was patient, knowledgeable, and answered all of my questions thoroughly. I really appreciated his transparency and professionalism, and I would absolutely recommend Steven and Gene Johnson to anyone needing plumbing or tankless water heater service. Thanks!

Joseph F came for a leak we were experiencing along with his partner and was beyond helpful. We have a 4 month old and also had a contractor there at the same time. He was kind enough to entertain our little one in his swing while my husband was moving some things in the bathroom and I was talking to the contractor. So unexpected and beyond the call they came out for. Thank you!
