1. Close the Blinds
Sunlight from outside going into the house eventually turns into heat energy, causing the house temperature to rise.
Closing all blinds and windows in the house will prevent the air conditioning unit from turning on so frequently, leading to a reduced electric bill.
If one wants to take it a step further, they can reduce the amount of light that’s absorbed by painting their walls a lighter color.
2. A/C Speed
Many people do not know that they can reduce an air conditioner’s fan speed. Lowering the fan speed will remove more humidity, keeping the air inside a house more comfortable.
Alternatively, one can find an AC unit that does this process even more effectively. As one already knows, humidity makes the air temperature seem that much more hotter than it already is. However, the right AC unit can make 77 degrees feel more like 73 degrees. As a side note, this is more of a concern for those who live in humid climates.
3. Avoid Fans
Contrary to common belief, turning on the fan doesn’t actually bring down the temperature. In fact, it actually makes the temperature rise by blowing climate-controlled air outside. As a result, one’s electric bills may rise as well.
Therefore, it’s best to avoid the use of fans all together. However, ceiling fans don’t usually pose this problem, unless the windows happen to be open. Ceiling vents, such as kitchen and bathroom vents, are notorious for causing this problem.
4. Double Pane Windows
According to the laws of thermodynamics, heat always travels to cooler areas. A good majority of heat that enters the house enters through the windows, mainly due to them being relatively thin.
However, double pane windows work far more efficiently when it comes to insulating the house. In the end, one’s bank account will appreciate the switch in the long run.
5. Good Thermostat
A good thermostat makes a world of difference when it comes to saving money on the cooling bills. A bad thermostat, on the other hand, will continue to pump out cool air, wasting it all together.
However, a high-quality one will tell the AC unit when to turn on and off, saving the person a considerable amount of money every one or so years.
