What is an Urban Dam?
Americans use more water than people in any other country in the world. Now, due to drought, climate change and urban sprawl, supplies are dwindling - and the upcoming year is on track to be one of the driest in history. Water rates, meanwhile, are going up.
GreenPlumbers is an organization committed to saving water by training plumbers in environmental issues. Our goal is to create millions of ‘urban dams’ around the country: homes that have water-efficient fixtures. Homeowners who have achieved ‘Urban Dam’ certification can be proud of the fact that they are involved in the most sustainable method of increasing our water supply: reducing demand. As the Urban Dam Project grows, its results will encourage local water agencies to promote other conservation efforts, lowering the need for new traditional dam projects and protecting our lakes and rivers. Along with conserving water and energy, the Urban Dam Project also helps homeowners save on their water bills, and shows them in real time the good they’re doing the planet: data accumulation on the web will track gallons saved.
